Can I work on a Student Visa in Australia? Many students ask this question and the short answer is yes.
As an international student, you are allowed to work in Australia part-time as soon as your Student Visa is granted and your course has commenced. When your course is in session, you can work up to 40 hours/fortnight. During the holidays you are allowed to work unrestricted hours. Most of our courses offer 16 weeks of holidays per year and some courses (especially in hospitality) also offer work placement as part of the studies which allows their students to work more.
Update (February 2023): The end of unrestricted work rights for international students
Starting from the 1st of July 2023, unrestricted work rights for international students in Australia will come to an end. However, foreign students will still be able to work more than pre-pandemic. The new restriction is 48 hours of work per fortnight while your course is in session. To learn more about this change and others, check out our blog article.
Update (January 2022): International students can work full-time in Australia
The Australian Government has removed the 40-hour-a-fortnight working restriction for Student Visa holders. Therefore, international students can now work full-time in Australia and have no restrictions on the number of hours they can work. If you are on a Student Visa in Australia, you can work as much as if you were Australian.
Update (September 2022): Full-time work rights for students until June 2023
The Department of Home Affairs announced that the government will reintroduce limits to work hours for international students in Australia again from June next year. They have not specified what these limits will be.
